Mayco Glaze Expert Todd Hickerson to Present Workshop

Mayco Glaze Expert Todd Hickerson to Present Workshop

Chicagoland potters will have an opportunity to expand their knowledge of glazes on Saturday, August 10 at Ceramic Supply Chicago’s Saturday workshop series.  Mayco’s Todd Hickerson will offer a hands-on workshop featuring Mayco’s new cratered Magma and Stoneware Crystal glazes, among others.

An Ohio native, Hickerson has been with Mayco for five years in the roles of designer, technical support, and sales.  He earned his BFA in Ceramics at Ohio State University and studied at the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in China. Before coming to Mayco, he operated a studio and gallery.  At Mayco, he creates pieces to showcase and market glazes and formulates new glazes in conjunction with the company’s chemical department.

The finishing process can be a challenge for many potters, who may find the glazing process and results somewhat mysterious.  Hickerson plans to address the

application process, where common missteps can adversely affect the intended outcome of the piece.  He will also discuss combining and layering glazes.

Workshop participants will be guided in the application of a variety of cones 5 through 10 textural stoneware glazes.  Hickerson will provide bisque stoneware vases, but participants are free to bring their own stoneware or porcelain bisque pieces.  All materials will be provided.  At the conclusion of the day-long workshop, the glazed pieces can be taken home for firing.

Registration is required for this workshop, which will run from 10:30 am through 2:30 p.m.  Plan to spend the entire day.  Any personal bisque pieces should not be for food consumption.
