NCECA Exhibits Expand Throughout Carnegie

Carnegie’s Studio Forget-Me-Not and Visions Present Touching HeARTs

In conjunction with NCECA’s 2018 Conference, several Carnegie galleries will be included in the Wednesday bus tour, including Studio Forget-Me-Not at 101 W. Main Street.  Art Facilitator Laura Stuart is working with New York potter and educator Lee Brozgol to put together an exhibit of works by people with disabilities, or, as Forget-Me-Not prefers to emphasize – “disABILITIES.”

In Carnegie, Studio Forget-Me-Not is dedicated to providing art services to individuals with disABILITIES, focusing on creative abilities.  The studio assists in finding opportunities for all individuals to sell and exhibit in a studio setting through a full schedule of classes and events.

Visions is a non-profit organization located in New York city that offers services to the blind and visually impaired.  New York Potter Lee Brozgol teaches ceramics to Visions clients.  He describes his approach: “The first thing I do is orient the students to the classroom.  I describe the room arrangement and take them to the tools, the slab roller, the supplies.  I show them three basic techniques: the pinch pot, slab construction, and coil construction.  Then I tell them, ‘You’re on your own.  I’m here to guide you.’”  Brozgol uses a “hand-over-hand” teaching procedure, standing behind the student and guiding the hands in the technique.  Brozgol was featured in a Ceramic Supply Inc. web story in 2013, which you can read HERE.

The focus of the Touching HeARTs exhibit will be to showcase the ceramic work created by visually impaired individuals who see mostly through touch and visualization.  Brozgol’s Visions students and Studio Forget-Me-Not students will show their work.  Brozgol explains the emotive power of art in reaching across barriers: “Through the exploration of perception and the creative process, we have created a union, of sorts, between the sighted and the blind – everyone gets inside the same reality.”  In a similar way, the two organizations are “touching hearts,” as they reach across state lines to collaborate with an organization that shares a similar mission of dedication and service.
The Touching HeARTs exhibit will run through April 18 at Studio Forget-Me-Not in Carnegie, Pennsylvania.

An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, March 16, from 5:30 through 8:30 pm.
